The Day of Knockout Noveling!

Our biggest activity of the TNT season — the Day of Knockout Noveling — arrives tomorrow. Here’s what you need to know.

DOKN is a full day of writing, snacking, and socializing. Doors open at 10 a.m. (no earlier!) and close at 6 p.m. You can come for as much or as little as you like, since there’s no programming apart from periodic word sprints. The event takes place at Jason’s Books and Coffee, located at 1590 44th St SW in Wyoming. The bookstore is at the southeast corner of the 44th & Burlingame intersection, close to US-131/M-6/I-196 and on The Rapid route #44. We have plenty of free on-site parking; if you need a ride, use the #event-planning channel on our Discord server to request/offer a lift.

DOKN is known for the potluck and for the silent auction:

  • You are welcome (but not required) to offer a dish to pass. You can bring what you like; the #event-planning channel on Discord includes a list of what folks say they plan to contribute. Based on the feedback from our October survey, we ask you to consider labeling home-made food — some participants are allergic to nuts, dairy, and bananas. Also, some are vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-sensitive.

  • For the silent auction, you are welcome to bring an object to donate. It must be new, and you cannot set a minimal bid. Gift cards for services are also welcome! For each item, people are free to bid throughout the day; the highest bid at 5:30p wins. Must be present to win! We accept cash, check, or card for payment for winning bids. All proceeds directly support WMAA.

You should bring your writing materials. We should have plenty of power strips, but if you’d like to bring your own, you are welcome to do so. Some people bring headphones, others bring favorite mugs.

There is no cost to attend DOKN and no obligation to bring anything to the potluck or to participate in the silent auction. You can come for the full day, or just stick around for an hour. We will make the conference room available for people who need short breaks away from the rest of the group, but be aware that the conference room is home to cats and reptiles. Although we’re using the bookstore, all the book carts will be sequestered to make space for tables and chairs, so the bookstore itself will not be open for business.

The purpose of DOKN is to “get all the words” in a fun frenzy of writing and snacking. It’s a low-drama affair. Come, write, meet new friends, and catch up with folks you don’t see that often.

See you tomorrow!
